Joseph Mickiewicz
BIRTH: 1886, in Vilna, Lithuania (Russian
Polish).
BIOGRAPHY:
Joseph did mandatory
service in the Russian Army (6 months - 1 year). The Mickiewicz
family ran a boarding house, for students, in Vilna. They were related to
Adam Mickiewicz, the Poet Laureate of Poland.
Joseph married Sophia Wysocky in
Vilna, Lithuania, and they came to the United States in 1908, after the births of their three children.
At the time of the 1910 Census, Joseph
was 24 years old, a gardener at the Golf Links, and living with his wife, Sophia (29), his son, Anthony (14), and his daughters, Stella (12), and Anna (10), at 37 Anderson Street, Naugatuck,
New Haven County, CT (2-WD - Series: T624 Roll: 137 Page: 84; District: 371). Also living with them,
was Adam Mickiewicz (31), his brother, who was a laborer at the Rubber Factory. The family name
wais
misspelled - Mickowictz.
At the time of the 1920 Census, Joseph
was 46 years old, a
molder at the Iron Foundry, and living at 94 Spring Street, Naugatuck, CT (3-WD - Series: T625;
Roll: 190; Page: 234; District:
303; Sheet
14A), with his wife, Sophia
(40), and his daughter Anna (18),
a rubber worker at the Rubber Factory. He worked in the Iron Foundry
during the winter, but continued to work at the Golf Links. Daughter, Anna,
died a year later, at the age of 19.
DEATH: Joseph died in 1932, in Naugatuck, CT, of a
heart attack, on the seventh hole of the Hop Brook Golf Links.

BIOGRAPHY:
Sophia married Joseph Mickiewicz in
Vilna, Lithuania. They came to the United States in 1908, after the births of their three children.
At the time of the 1910 Census, Sophia
was 29 years old, and living with her husband, Joseph (24), a
gardener at the Golf Links, her son, Anthony (14), and her daughters, Stella (12), and Anna (10), at 37 Anderson Street, Naugatuck, CT

Also living with them,

Anthony arrived in the United States, with his parents and siblings, in 1908.
At the time of the 1910 Census, Anthony was 14 years old, and living with his Father, Joseph (24), a
gardener at the Golf Links, his Mother, Sophia (29), and his sisters: Stella (12), and Anna (10), at 37 Anderson Street, Naugatuck, CT
(2-WD - Series: T624 Roll: 137 Page: 84; District: 371). Also living with them,
was Adam Mickiewicz (31), his Uncle, who was a laborer at the Rubber Factory. They were all born in Poland
(Russian) (actually Vilna, Lithuania), arriving in the United States in 1908.

DEATH: Stella was a resident of Naugatuck, CT when she died, at the age of 73, on 29 Nov 1971, in Waterbury, CT.
BURIAL: Stella was buried at St. James Cemetery, in Naugatuck CT.
