Jean Baptiste Petitjean

                                                    Married

Judith Marion Beuchet

BIRTH: 20 Aug 1841, Canton de Berne,Switzerland

BIOGRAPHY:

Judith's father was Henry Beuchet, born in Switzerland in 1797.  Judith married Jean Baptiste Petitjean, a laborer, born in Belfort, France. They lived in Great Barrington, MA, where the birth of their daughter, Rose, is recorded in the town records (b 13 Feb 1860).

After Jean Baptiste's death, in 1861 (also recorded in Great Barrington Town Records), Judith, married a collier, Frederick Renaud, who had lived with Jean's brother, George Petitjean, in Sandisfield, MA (1860 Census; Series: M653; Roll: 487; Page: 765).

At the time of the 1870 Census, Judith and Frederick were living on a farm, in Ironton, Sauk County, Wisconsin (Series: M593  Roll: 1739  Page: 133), with Judith's daughter, Rose (10), and their children together: Alina (8), Mary (6), Flora (4), Alice (2) and George (3 months), born in May 1870. Also living with them was Judith's Father, listed as Andrew (actually Henry) Beuchet (73), born in Switzerland, and an adopted orphan, William Nelm (12), born in Wisconsin.

At the time of the 1880 Census, Judith and Frederick were still living on their farm, in Ironton, Sauk County, Wisconsin (Series: T9; Roll: 1446; Page: 148; District: 255), with Rosia (20), Mary (15), Floria (14), Alice (12), Frederick (8), Frank (5), Maud (1), and Henry Beuchet (83). Mathews (45), a merchant in a general store, and her granddaughter, Iva M. (19). Judith had given birth to 9 children, 8 of whom were still living. This census mistakenly lists her place of birth as France.

Rose was the only child of Jean Baptiste Petitjean and Judith Beuchet Petitjean. Her Father, Jean Baptiste, died on 4 Apr 1861, two months after her first birthday. Her Mother, Judith, then married Frederick Renaud, a friend of Jean's brother, George Petitjean.

In 1870, Rose was 10 years old, and living on a farm, in Ironton, Sauk County, Wisconsin (Series: M593  Roll: 1739  Page: 133), with her Mother, Judith, her step-father, Frederick, and her half siblings: Alina (8), Mary (6), Flora (4), Alice (2) and George (3 months), born in May 1870.  Also living with them was her grandfather, listed as Andrew (actually Henry) Beuchet (73), born in Switzerland; and an adopted orphan, William Nelm (12), born in Wisconsin.  Rose was now being called Rosa Renaud.

At the time of the 1880 Census, Rose was listed as Rosia, 20 years old, and living on the family farm, in Ironton, Sauk County, Wisconsin (Series: T9; Roll: 1446; Page: 148; District: 255), with her Mother, Judith, her step-father, Frederick, her half siblings: Mary (15), Floria (14), Alice (12), Frederick (8), Frank (5), Maud (1), and her grandfather, Henry Beuchet (83). The 1900 Census listed birth dates, and that given for Rose (b Feb 1860), confirms her identity.         At the time of the 1910 Census, Rose (Rosa) was 50 years old, and living in Ironton, Sauk County, Wisconsin (Series: T624; Roll: 1736; Page: 200; District: 119), with her husband, Roswell (45), a merchant in a general store, and their daughter, Iva M. (19). Living next door to them was Rose's Mother, Judith Renaud (68), who was now widowed. Judith had given birth to 9 children, 8 of whom were still living. This census mistakenly lists Judith's place of birth as France.

At the time of the 1920 Census, Rose (Rosa) was 59 years old, and living at 639 East Johnson Street, Madison City, Dane County, Wisconsin (2-WD - Series: T625; Roll: 1981; Page: 215; District: 119), with her husband, Roswell (58), a salesman in a grocery store.
